A best-selling author who is the world s leading spokesman for child soldiers strongly defended himself against an Australian newspaper s accusation that he had distorted the account of his service in Sierra Leone s civil war during the 1990s. In a statement released on Tuesday, the author, Ishmael Beah, above, said: I am right about my story. This is not something one gets wrong. His publisher, Sarah Crichton Books, a Farrar, Straus & Giroux imprint, also defended the accuracy of his book, A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier. The Weekend Australian reported that his ordeal had lasted one year, not the three that he had stated. Mr. Beah, now 27, said the newspaper may not have understood that rebels first attacked his village in 1993, two years before they closed a village mine.
