Arts, Briefly: A Turkey Carries Ireland’s Hopes
Ireland has chosen Dustin the Turkey, above, a glove puppet known for belching and a thick Dublin accent, to restore the country s glory at the Eurovision Song Contest in May, Agence France-Presse reported. The bird, a star of television programs for nearly two decades, defeated five finalists late Saturday, when judges chose his song Irelande Douze Pointe ( Ireland 12 Points ), a parody of voting procedures at the Europe-wide competition that also pokes fun of Riverdance, the international hit Irish dance show. Composed by Darren Smith and Simon Fine, the song includes the lyrics: Shake your feathers and pop your beak, shake it to the west and to the east, wave Euro-hands and Euro-feet, wave them in the air to the turkey beat, The Times of London reported. Ireland has won the contest a record seven times, including three straight in the 1990s, but finished last in 2007 in Helsinki. Dustin has previously run (unsuccessfully) for president of Ireland and recorded with the Irish rock star Bob Geldof.
